The Show Everyone is Talking About.
With this site I am going to explore the religious themes, imagery and similarities within HBO's True Blood. Starting with the open credit sequence and discuss the religious imagery mixed with sexual imagery (starting in day, progressing to night and ending with a baptism). I will discuss the correlation of Christian views & current issues with same sex couples/marriage and how the show portrays that with human/vampire couples and discrimination. Lafayette as a blatantly gay character and his discrimination
and vampires viewed in the same "category" and oppressed the same way.
I will also be discussing the christian group in the show "The Fellowship of the Sun". I will discuss their ideals and how they mirror those of the christian church by growing an army of believers against the vampires, silver rings vs. purity rings (christian church suggesting teens to take abstinence vows as well as F.O.S making pacts to stay away from vampires). Also Season 2 Godric being held captive for a "ritual execution" (nailed to a cross and left out to burn in the sun) later revealing that Godric was going along willingly making him a martyr.
It is my opinion that, True Blood, is an allegory of how today's religious groups act towards homosexuals and anyone existing in another category of person. How today's Christian groups view and treat homosexual individuals, and how they use extreme ways to convince others into their belief systems is mirrored almost exactly by the characters against vampires and those of the Fellowship of the Sun.
